Goteblüd + Crass + Escape Route

Symbol by Dave King Show!!!

I'm really excited about two-day "Symbol by Dave King" events happening at Goteblüd this weekend. I'm particularly insterested because the show is about design and Crass—one part what I do now and one part nostalgia. I remember listening to Crass back in high school and their symbol was one of the first things I ever made when I took my first highschool screenprinting/intro to graphic design class (naturally, I made it a patch). It's crazy to think that the designer of this iconic logo will be sharing the original sketches of a symbol that has been replicated and recognized by people all over the world. Btw, on Sunday, don't forget to bring your skateboard or any flat surface you want stenciled by the designer of this iconic logo himself!

So for those of you who aren't in the know, Goteblüd is an independent zine shop/gallery (soon to be zine and paper ephemera library) with a great selection of both rare/vintage zines. Goteblüd is ran by a dude named Matt who I met at the SF Zine Fest back in September—he's super cool, supportive and even bought multiple copies of our Escape Route zine!

A couple weekends ago, I took the girls to "the secret zine place" after a morning skate sesh at Potrero skate park and lunch at Casa Sanchez Restaurant. I often refer to Goteblüd as the "secret zine place" just because it's kind of hidden away in a cozy little space on Valencia between 18th and 19th St. in the Mission (between Paxton Gate Curiosity for Kids and Mission Bicycle).

Casa Sanchez Special

We spent a good few hours just browsing the zines and having Matt droppin some zine knowledge on us. He was also generous enough to share his box-full of uniquely, hand-made acquisitions from the NY Zine Fest from the previous week. Goteblüd has some pretty cool stuff and the first time I went there, Matt and made a trade and I scored myself a pretty sweet 1980's skate + hardcore zine! There were also a few more skate zines from the 80s and a few newer ones. There's always a rotation of gems at Goteblüd so you never know what you're going to see the next time you go. Topics range from skateboarding, to music, to politics, to obscure topics, and much more.

Anyways, if you're in the SF Bay Area, come by and support your special local, independent zine shop/library! Also thanks to Needles & Pens for also supporting us and carrying or zine. We really appreciate all the support!

Also, look out for Escape Route Issue #2. Thanks to all our Kickstarter Backers for all the support! Stay tuned!

See you guys tonight! We'll post pics after this weekend, so keep a look out.

Purple Skunk Skate Jam Clinic 2011

This past Sunday, Marie, Colleen, Lucia, Jolie, and Patty from SLAG SF were out in Golden Gate Park at the Purple Skunk All Skate Jam hosting a drop-in clinic for anyone interested in learning more about skateboarding and how to skate. Purple Skunk is a locally owned shop out in San Francisco's Richmond District and they hold an annual jam with all kinds of skateboarding, such as longboarding, slalom, freestyle, and new school. Towards the end of the day we got a little clinic going with girls and women across all ages. Also shout out to Pricilla from SJSU Longboarding Club for teaching us how to slide and to Nicole from Colorado for stopping by for the day. Here are some photos from the Sunday!

Support Escape Route Zine #2 on Kickstarter

Visit Our Kickstarter Page Here

ABOUT THE PROJECT: We want to print issue #2 of the community based female skateboarding zine Escape Route. Escape Route is a DIY cut and paste community driven zine featuring all female skateboarders. The idea of the zine is to inspire people to skate, properly represent females in the skate community AND show that we're everywhere!!!!! It also seeks to empower young girls & women to grow into strong, confident leaders who promote and implement social equity via skateboarding.

Escape Route will share submissions contributed by female skaters from around the world. Submissions include photos, articles and interviews of skaters, recipes, tour diaries, reviews, directions to skate spots, up and coming skate events, and places to stay/people to contact when on skate trips.

ABOUT PRINTING THE ZINE: In order to finish this project we need to print the zine (this is where you and Kickstarter come in). It will be a 32 page, color, 5.5"x8.5", cut/paste zine. We would like to use a printing company who uses recycled papers/soy-based inks. It'll be about $500 to print the zines. It will also be about another $600 to distribute the zines (it costs about a $1 to ship in the US. and about $3 to ship worldwide) depending where the zines are sent. $50 will go toward kickstarter/amazon processing fees.

PLEDGES: The money pledged to the zine via Kickstarter will go toward paying for the printing services and postage for distributing the zines worldwide. All leftover money (if any) will go toward future issues of the zine. Since this is a volunteer run zine, we are using Kickstarter to pay for the zine and make the zine more accessible to people regardless of their financial situation by not having to charge $ for Escape Route.

If you'd like to be a part of the #2 issue of Escape Route please send in your submissions to skatelikeagirlsf@gmail.com by May 21, 2011. We'd like to have the zine ready to print by May 31, 2011 and ready to distribute by June 2011.

Join SLAG SF & SFWAR Walk Against Rape

SLAG SF will be collaborating with the non-profit organization San Francisco Women Against Rape (SFWAR) on Saturday, April 30, 2011. Come out and join us in support of SFWAR’s 6th Annual Walk Against Rape starting at the Women’s Building and Ending at the Potrero del Sol Skatepark. SLAG SF will be participating in the march and providing a skate clinic as well as skating the Potrero Skatepark at the end of the walk. There will be performances and vendors as well for the remainder of the day. Proceeds from the day’s events will go out to the organization’s services that support survivors of rape and sexual assault. The walk will begin at 10 am and end around 1:30pm with activities throughout the day at Potrero del Sol Park. Our clinic welcomes everyone. All ages, all abilities.

Walk Against Rape aims to:

Raise awareness in San Francisco around issues of sexual violence.

Provide a space for survivors of sexual violence to heal and celebrate their survival.

Educate communities about the resources available in the aftermath of an assault.

Raise money for San Francisco's only community based rape crisis center.

Create community around shared experiences of sexual violence so as to not isolate further the experience.

To make visible what has historically been silenced and invisible.

For more information or to register and walk in the march visit sfwar.org

To walk with SLAG SF contact us at sanfrancisco@skatelikeagirl.com

About SFWAR

San Francisco Women Against Rape provides resources, support, advocacy and education to strengthen the work of all individuals, and communities in San Francisco that are responding to, healing from, and struggling to end sexual violence. At SFWAR, we believe that no single individual, organization, foundation, or business alone can stop the epidemic of sexual assault, but by responding as a whole community, we each bring our piece of the solution.

SFWAR is a women of color led, volunteer-based organization that has provided rape crisis services to survivors of sexual assault for over 30 years. As the primary provider of rape crisis services in San Francisco, we also offer support to friends and families of survivors and provide expert advice, training, and assistance to healthcare workers, medical professionals, educators, law enforcement officers and other professionals throughout the city. Our prevention programs have reached young people in classrooms in schools serving every area of San Francisco, and provided information and resources to people of all ages through community programs, social services, and numerous community events. All our services are confidential and free of charge.
